The Allard School of Law is fortunate to offer a variety of clinical and practical course offerings for upper-year students. These programs offer opportunities for our students to learn practical skills and problem solve in a supervised environment, provide access to justice, and directly engage with members of the legal profession. In addition, clinical programs offer students an opportunity to develop professional skills such as file management, document drafting, interview techniques, evidence analysis, legal research and writing, and advocating for clients before courts and tribunals.
Notes
For students, who commenced law school in September 2016 or later, the following rules apply:
- Students are limited to 20 credits of clinical and competitive mooting credits (the credits allocated to each clinic are noted on the Clinics & Externships page).
- Students are not permitted to take more than two clinical programs in the course of their JD degree.
Please note that credit will be granted for only one of LAW 488 (Indigenous Community Legal Clinic), LAW 490 (Criminal Clinic), and LAW 491 (LSLAP).

Course Registration FAQs (this information will be updated prior to July to reflect the move to Workday Student)
I have been accepted into a clinic / externship / moot. How do I enroll in these courses? How do I enroll in the mandatory prerequisite or corequisite courses?
If you have been accepted for a clinic, externship or moot, you do not need to self-register these courses online through the UBC Student Services Centre. Academic Services staff will register the accepted students in these courses and contact them in advance of registration to save seats in any prerequisite or corequisite courses. Students accepted to a clinic, externship, or moot should not attempt to self-register in courses for which seats have been saved for them.
There are no set times allocated to my clinic / externship / moot in the upper year course listing. How do I ensure there will be no conflicts when selecting my other courses?
The clinic / externship / moot directors and coaches will contact accepted students in advance of course registration to discuss scheduling if there are any specific times that students are expected to be available. Generally, if an accepted student does not hear from the clinic / externship / moot director or coach, they may assume there will be no conflicts when selecting their courses. Accepted students who have concerns regarding their course selection and time conflicts may directly contact their clinic / externship /moot director or coach.
Note that the W̱SÁNEĆ law field course, Judicial Externship, Indigenous Community Legal Clinic and Rise Women's Legal Centre are full-term courses. Students accepted for these clinics and externships are not permitted to take other courses during their clinic / externship term.
