Invited Visitors
The Allard School of Law welcomes invited, self-funded visiting faculty and visiting scholars. These visiting appointments are generally six months long. On occasion, shorter visits are possible, but without the same level of support (such as office space and library borrowing privileges).
Visitors in this category provide a valuable opportunity for the exchange of ideas and research and the creation of new and ongoing national and international research collaborations. Invited visitors are admitted into this program only where there is a Faculty Sponsor from the Allard School of Law who supports the application.
Visiting faculty includes professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers who have continuing appointments at other universities or academic institutions. Visiting faculty members are usually on sabbatical and are expected to return to their home institutions at the end of the visit.
If you are a graduate student interested in Visiting International Research Student opportunities at UBC, please see the Visiting International Research Student website. All queries regarding these applications should be directed to Go Global. Contact details are available on the Visiting International Research Student website.
Allard School of Law Faculty Sponsor
All visitors require either a full-time or an emeriti faculty member as sponsor. Before applying, applicants need to make contact with a Faculty sponsor to ask whether they are willing to sponsor the visit. If you have not identified a sponsor, then please review the faculty profiles to identify faculty members who are working in your field of interest and area of research. Send an e-mail (including your research plan and current curriculum vitae) to a faculty member working in your area and ask if they might be willing to act as your faculty sponsor. Faculty sponsors will be required to provide you with an email or letter indicating their willingness to serve as a faculty sponsor for your visit and an approximately 250 word statement describing the benefits of your visit to the Allard School of Law and their ongoing research and collaborations.
Faculty members receive many more requests for sponsorship than they can accept, so please limit your enquiries to faculty members where there is a definite research link and a possibility of research collaboration.
Application Form and Supplementary Materials
Once you have secured a faculty sponsor, please complete the Visiting Faculty / Visiting Scholar Application Form (PDF) and send it to the address indicated on the form. In addition to the application form, please include the following supporting documents:
- current curriculum vitae (including name, position, and contact information of 2 referees)
- letter from the Dean/Department Head/supervisor on letterhead indicating continuing academic appointment
- copy of e-mail or letter from an Allard School of Law faculty member confirming their willingness to act as the faculty sponsor and detailing the benefits of your visit to the Allard School of Law and the faculty member's research and international collaborations
- a detailed research plan
- a copy of the photo page of your valid passport
The Allard School of Law is not able to accommodate all visiting scholar applications.
