UBC’s Media Relations team offers a number of resources and support for Allard Law faculty who are interested in sharing their research and expertise through the media.
- Sign up for media training: UBC Media Relations offers online media training to faculty members who are interested in providing commentary to news media and general tips for anyone who will be speaking with media.
- Sign up as an expert in the UBC Experts Guide: If you’re interested in being a source for news media, you can sign up to add your profile to the UBC Experts Guide, an online information source that gives journalists quick and direct access to UBC experts. Each year, UBC’s Media Relations office receives thousands of calls from web, print, television, and radio journalists seeking UBC expertise on a wide range of topical issues.
- Submit an op-ed to The Conversation or another media outlet: The Conversation is an online platform that publishes op-eds written by Canadian scholars. After its launch in 2017, articles by UBC scholars received approximately 3 million views in two years—an average of more than 20,000 reads per article. See UBC’s guide to pitching to The Conversation and their general tips for pitching op-eds.
- Share your research and expertise: If you’re publishing new research that could be newsworthy, or if a topic within your area of study is beginning to take over the news cycle, please reach out to Alex Walls, Allard Law’s UBC Media Relations contact to discuss possible ways to share your work with journalists.
