Profile

Professor Uteck practiced law in Nova Scotia before before deciding to pursue an academic career beginning at the SMU Sobey School of Business. She completed her doctorate on reconceptualizing spatial privacy for the Internet of Everything during which time she was the recipient of several awards, including the Gowlings Fellow in Technology Law, as well as winning several international peer reviewed competitions.

Prior to her appointment in the Educational Leadership faculty stream at Allard School of Law in 2019, Professor Uteck taught extensively in the 1L curriculum and in areas of commercial law, including e-commerce at both Dalhousie and University of Ottawa law schools, as well as courses focused on her research interests in privacy and more broadly, law and technology including an interdisciplinary course she developed, The Law of Everyware. She was also a Visiting Professor in the international graduate business law programme at Vrije University in Amsterdam where she taught privacy and e-commerce law.

As a member of the Law & Technology Institute and the interdisciplinary Master of Electronic Commerce programme at Dalhousie University and the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa, Professor Uteck’s leadership, research and teaching contributed to enhancing awareness and understanding of the legal, policy, and ethical challenges posed by existing and emerging technologies.

Professor Uteck’s teaching intensive focus at Allard includes Torts, Contracts, Commercial and Secured Transactions, as well as regular supervision of students’ advanced research in privacy law. She also serves as the Director of the Allard Upper-Year Mooting Program, overseeing all competitive and consensus-based moots, as well as coaching the B.C. Law Schools Moot team.

Professor Uteck is committed to the Allard Indigenous Legal Studies (ILS) community. Together with ILS Associate Director Lee Schmdit, Professor Uteck developed, leads and teaches the ILS Summer Intensive in Torts for incoming Indigenous JD students. The course further provides an opportunity for skill development and early community building among students, the Allard Law community and the Indigenous legal community. She continues to serves as an advisor and instructor in the ILS Academic Leadership Certificate Program. In 2021, Professor Uteck was the recipient of the Indigenous Law Students Association Courage in Law Award, and in 2023, she was the recipient of the George Curtis Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence.
