The Allard School of Law is pleased to announce the launch of an executive learning program in Mining Law and Sustainability. The program, designed for anyone working in or interested in the mining industry, is particularly distinctive in Canada because of its focus on sustainability and Indigenous issues.
“Vancouver is the mining capital of the world and there is necessary pressure on the mining industry to address critical environmental, human rights, and other sustainability concerns,” explained Dr. Carol Liao, an Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Business Law at Allard Law and one of the program advisors, along with Professors Sara Ghebremusse, Stepan Wood and Karin Mickelson. “Our goal is to provide those working in the mining sector with the tools they need to better understand the complex legal and regulatory frameworks that govern this ever-evolving industry, including foundational education on climate governance and Indigenous rights.”
This program provides an opportunity for the larger community, regardless of their educational background, to access educational resources and globally-recognized expertise that is available at the law school and the university. Whether someone works in an office in downtown Vancouver, or at a remote mining site in Chile, the condensed online format offers flexibility and choice in how and where to learn.

“The law school is excited to offer this new learning opportunity extending beyond our traditional community of law students and legal scholars,” said Dean pro tem Janine Benedet. “We hope that this new venture into the world of executive and community education can serve as a model to emulate. Our goal is to create more programs such as this that touch on meaningful and relevant topics that address some of the world’s most pressing issues.”

Dr. Chimisso dos Santos is an expert on mining and sustainability and has practiced law in the oil, gas and mining industries for over 20 years. She has extensive national and international experience in Sub-Saharan Africa, South America and Asia. Ms. Davis-Alphonse is a member of the Tla’amin Nation and is Principle/Lead Consultant for Chastity Davis Consulting. She has worked with several Indigenous and non-Indigenous companies and Organizations to build strong, meaningful, and productive relationships between Indigenous communities, corporations, and government.
