Three Allard Law students have been selected as UBC Wesbrook Scholars this year— third year students Paul Jon, Julia Sande and Hannah Roche.
The Wesbrook Scholar Designation is given to twenty outstanding undergraduate and post-baccalaureate UBC students each year in a university-wide competition, and is one of the highest honours a UBC student can achieve. Wesbrook Scholars are selected for their achievement across several areas, including academic excellence, leadership and community involvement.
Our Wesbrook Scholars recently made time to share a little bit about themselves with us, starting with Paul below. Stay tuned for Q&As with Julia and Hannah.
What has been the highlight of your law school experience?
Participating in the Gale Cup Moot last year was definitely a big highlight of law school. From receiving amazing feedback and mentorship from my coaches and debating the issues with my brilliant teammates for hours on end, to practicing before the BC Court of Appeal and doing the real moot in Toronto, it was a really rewarding experience and learning opportunity.
How do you maintain balance and cultivate wellness during school?
I'm a very introverted person, so when I craft my weekly or monthly schedules, I make sure to actually schedule in time to dedicate to relaxing by myself with no distractions. I particularly love watching movies and often go to the theatre alone—it is a very relaxing experience that I highly recommend!
What do you hope to do after graduation?
I want to keep learning, and not just about the law! I really want to start taking piano lessons, and I hope to improve my language skills in Korean and French and perhaps start learning a new language entirely.
What are you currently reading?
Pachinko, by Korean-American author Min Jin Lee. I have always been interested in the history of Korean experiences with Japan, and the novel is one of the few on the subject written in English.
